LEGO® Based Therapy

LEGO® Based therapy is a social development program that uses the interest and motivation of LEGO® activities to support the development of a range of social and communication skills.

As the LEGO® building System is highly organised, systematic and predictable, it is highly motivating for children which helps children to feel regulated, calm and engaged.

LEGO® Based therapy can be used to target goals around social skills, increase confidence with social interaction, building relationships, team work and collaboration with others, language skills, and motor skills.

Who is LEGO® Based Therapy suitable for?

LEGO® Based therapy was developed by neuropsychologist Dr. Daniel LeGoff  in the mid-1990's (LeGoff et al., 2014). The program was initially developed for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), however it is now seen to be a beneficial intervention for children with other social development and communication difficulties. Including speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), anxiety, emotional regulation, depression, phobias, adjustment disorders.

The program is run individually and in a group setting (1:3) for children and adolescents aged from four to fifteen years old. When forming the groups we aim to match children by age and skill levels. Group Age ranges 5 - 7 years, 8 - 11 years and 12 -15 Years.

What are the benefits of LEGO® Based Therapy?

Through LEGO® Based Therapy, children engage together in a fun learning experience as they build the LEGO® construct together.

The benefits of using LEGO® play in a therapy setting helps to develop and reinforce language, play, and social skills. It promotes social interaction, supports children to develop problem-solving skills, learn to communicate, learn various ways of relating to each other, express their feelings, modify their behaviour, turn taking, sharing and the learning of concepts, which helps develop social bonds with peers.

Other benefits found in research studies into the benefits of LEGO® Based Therapy programs have shown it can help develop the following skills: Self-initiated social contact, extended duration of social interaction, language concepts, descriptive language, asking for clarification - resolving communication breakdowns, positional language, patience, empathy, memory skills, sequencing and planning, non-verbal skills, motor skills.

What is involved LEGO® Based Therapy?

Children collaboratively work together to build a LEGO® model of choice following the instructions for the build. Each child has a specific role, which they each get a turn of throughout the session.

There is opportunity after the structured play to partake in freestyle building individually or in groups (based on the LEGO® Serious Play® concept).

Throughout this process children are required to use verbal and non-verbal communication, collaboration, active listening, problem solve, task orientation, get creative all together and most of all have a great time!

The LEGO®  logo, SERIOUS PLAY®, Imaginopedia™, the Minifigure and the Brick and Knob configurations are trademarks of the LEGO® Group.
